How did you start playing Guitar? When did you start?
I started to play Guitar at age of 12 without any teacher or formal training and played mostly the Popular & Rock music at that time. After 3 years, I started to find Classical Guitar to be more interesting and began to study seriously Classical Guitar under some formal lessons.
From 1985 to 1987, I consequently took part the Yamaha Guitar Competition in Bangkok for the second time and got the first prize in a roll. Among these years, I saw a growth in Classical Guitar growth in Thailand and the competition was getting more severe in those years and I enjoyed more with the competitions. Around 1987, I was admitted to the Music Department, Faculty of Fine and Applied Arts, Chulalongkorn University, studying western music and Classical Guitar. I studied with two teachers at that time and they both enlightened me with their experience.
After graduation 1990, I immediately got a job in the music school called Chintakarn Music Institute as the Head of Guitar Department. Being the head a department, I had to do a lot of documents works leaving me less time to play the Guitar. Until one day in the year of 1994, Mr. Kamol Achariyasart, the Founder of the Bangkok Guitar Society, called me and told me that he had an idea about making Classical Guitar to be an more well known instrument in Thailand. After talking with him a few times, I finally agreed to perform again for the first time after four years of silence.
We started to work together from that time. Two CD, the Guitar Lai Thai (Thai Traditional Music played on Classical Guitar) 1 and 2 were released. With a lot of helping from Mr. Leon Koudelak, the Czech Republic Guitarist, and now he is the Artist Manager of the BGS, we can hold the Thailand International Guitar Festival every year. Now I have developed my career as a performing artist and teacher in Classical Guitar.
Tell us about your Guitar society, its objective and development and your role there?
Bangkok Guitar Society was founded by Mr. Kamol Achariyasart in 1993. I joined the society because of his motivation of making Classical Guitar to be more popular in Thailand. This could help a lot of people, students, teachers and performers, by producing more opportunities in career. It's very challenging work for me. Our major activity is the Thailand International Guitar Festival organized every year. Every 4 months we will have a Mini-Recital, occasionally a joint-event with music school, for students and people who would like to practice about performing on stage.
What about the development of Flamenco Guitar community in Thailand? What is your feeling about Flamenco Guitar?
About the Flamenco Guitar, I can say that not so many people in Thailand know how to play professionally in comparison with the Classical Guitar. We need a good Flamenco Guitar teacher here. Flamenco Guitar is very interesting one for me. However, I don't have the opportunity to take serious Flamenco Guitar class. When I have this exposure, I would like to learn more about it.
Tell us about your experience of teaching Classical Guitar?
I have quite a few students after year of teaching. Some students think that the Classical Guitar is easy to learn and do not attend to details, when problem come, they always give up. Some of them focus on technique too much, so with a wish to play only difficult and high-speed repertoires, but at the end they cannot execute slow repertoires beautifully. In my opinion, we have to think about how to play everything correctly and stably and musically. Getting into more musically is gradually and dependent on experience and feelings.
Tell us about the upcoming concerts in Hong Kong in November?
First, I would like to thank you Mr. Ian Fu for organize this concert. I prepare all Spanish repertoires for this concert. It is very exciting to play in Hong Kong and this is my first time concert here. I hope the audience will enjoy the music. I don't know about the Classical and Flamenco Guitar situation in Hong Kong, but I'm sure that this concert is very interesting.
As a Classical Guitarist, what is your objective and tell people in the concert by expressing the music. What is your favorite repertoire of music or pieces of music.
Every time when I practice for the concert, I think about the basis of how to make people happy with the music and my interpretation. I imagine about what people want to see and hear and try to practice to go along the track to target. About my favorite repertoires, actually I like J.S. Bach's Music a lot because I think his music is very smart. Having said that, it's very funny that mostly the music I play is not his music. Instead, I play a lot of Romantic and Contemporary music. Now I play more on the Classical period music and hope one day I can play more music by Bach.
